PT Kereta Api Indonesia and GE Transportation’s symposium for Indonesia’s rail transport industry

Press Release

JAKARTA, Indonesia – 26 September 2016 – State-owned PT Kereta Api Indonesia, (PT KAI), together with GE Transportation (NYSE: GE) held a symposium today for stakeholders involved in Indonesia’s rail transport industry, with a view to exploring new digital technology which can be used to increase the overall service, efficiency, productivity and safety for passengers and businesses alike.

Aimed at taking Indonesia’s rail operations to the next frontier, the symposium was attended by officials and senior executives from the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, PT KAI, GE, Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit, PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta), Jabodetabek Transport Management Agency and Bank Mandiri.

“Indonesia has a rich, 150-year railway history that drives our country’s growth and development, especially in Sumatra and Java,” said Indonesian Transport Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi “Today, Indonesia’s railway serves as a major backbone of our land transport system, carrying more than 200 million passengers and nearly 20 million tons of freight each year.”

Indonesia currently operates about 4,800 kilometers of active railway tracks. As part of the National Railway Masterplan, Indonesia will expand its network 12,100 kilometers, including 3,800 km urban railways network, by 2030 and extend to. Bali, Batam, Kalimantan, Papua and Sulawesi.

“With our rich natural resources, a huge population and solid economic fundamentals, Indonesia is slated to become the world’s 7th largest economy by 2030. To realize this goal, Indonesia’s railway system needs to be expanded and modernized for greater efficiency,” continued Mr. Sumadi.

Edi Sukmoro, President Director of PT KAI, said, “In today’s world, transport – whether by land, sea or air – needs to be operated at optimum levels in order to deliver the best service to customers, and the best return to stakeholders. For PT KAI, this means optimizing the use of all of our assets, from railway track to rolling stock and all our supporting facilities. We believe the digital technologies being developed today will achieve this.”

GE has a long and successful partnership with PT KAI, helping to meet Indonesia’s rail transportation requirements across Indonesia.  In addition to being a leader in the global diesel locomotive industry, GE is also pioneering the use of digital technology to address a multitude of challenges faced by railway operators around the world.

Handry Satriago, CEO GE Indonesia, said, “As the leader in our business, GE has been helping to solve the world’s toughest rail transportation challenges through the use of software and data analytics. The result is decreased locomotive emissions, lower fuel consumption, increased velocity, and enhanced safety.”

A central pillar to this is GE Transportation’s Rail Connect 360, a Predix-based set of solutions that provide data-driven insights to achieve strategic outcomes for rail industry customers. The configurable systems-level solution can unlock value to deliver customer solutions across all aspects of the rail business.

GE Transportation network software for rail systems can optimize mainline train networks, classification yards and intermodal terminals - significantly driving railroad productivity and efficiency to unprecedented levels. Additionally, GE Transportation’s software solutions are helping customers optimize rail operations and reduce energy use, both of which contribute directly to increased productivity, reduced operational expenses and reduction in fuel costs and emissions.”

“Our digital technologies have been successfully implemented for our customers, some of whom operate in very challenging economic and geographical conditions. These same technologies can also be applied here in Indonesia to bring Indonesia’s rail operations to the next frontier,” said Mr. Hutagalung, GE Indonesia operations president director.

GE has a long-standing partnership with PT KAI, stretching back more than six decades. PT KAI currently operates a fleet of more than 350 GE powered locomotives, the latest of which are powered by the GE CC206 diesel-electric locomotives.
