Indonesian Railway Positioned a Vital Backbone for Improved Connectivity

JAKARTA, Indonesia – 18 October 2016 – State-owned PT Kereta Api Indonesia, (PT KAI), together with GE Transportation (NYSE: GE) are joining forces to enhance the country’s railway infrastructure as part of Indonesia’s commitment to improve connectivity to other parts of the country as well as the growing ASEAN economy.

Said Edi Sukmoro, President Director PT KAI, “Indonesia is an economic engine supported by a wide range of commodities, as well as a significant population base spread across the country’s extensive islands. As a result, the economic and social development of the country is not as equitable as it can be. Continuous improvements to create a modern rail infrastructure will be vital to improving connectivity between businesses and people in Indonesia, and further catalyze Indonesia’s position as a top 10 global economy.”

He added: “Indonesia’s railway has been pivotal to the country’s growth for more than 70 years.  Today, it serves as a major backbone of our land transport system, carrying more than 200 million passengers and nearly 30 million tons of freight each year. Although our National Railway Masterplan will see more than a doubling of our network of railway tracks from 5,000 kilometers to 12,100 kilometers by 2030, we also need to focus on fleet efficiency, lower emissions, greater cost savings and improved railway safety. For this reason, we are working closely with technology leaders such as GE.

GE, which is a platinum sponsor of the ASEAN Railways CEO Conference, has been supporting ASEAN’s and Indonesia’s railway sector for over 60 years.

Mohamed Butt, Asia Pacific CEO for GE Transportation, said, “GE remains committed to supporting the growth of the industry in Indonesia and modernizing PT KAI’s current fleet, which comprises more than 350 GE powered diesel and diesel-electric locomotives. We also support PT KAI with a multi-year maintenance and service agreement for PT KAI’s locomotives to ensure fleet reliability and productivity.”

Mr. Butt also noted that while having reliably functioning locomotives was important, the digitization of rail is the biggest industry opportunity today. He said, “It will be game-changing for operators like PT KAI to leverage digital technologies to take targeted actions to optimize outcomes including everything from increased fuel efficiency and velocity to reduced emissions and declines in unplanned downtime.”

A central pillar to this is GE Transportation’s Rail Connect 360, which integrates, automates and optimizes our customers’ operations by providing real-time, data-driven insights. Ultimately, the software gives our customers the ability to focus on the things that matter most – helping them make fast, informed decisions to grow their business.

Mr. Butt said, “As we partner with PT KAI to focus on the future, we remain committed to using our digital technologies to bring Indonesia’s rail operations to the next frontier, as well as significantly increase Indonesia’s internal connectivity within the country.”
