GE Marine Showcases Breakthrough Tier 4 Technology at International WorkBoat Show

GE expands series of Tier 4 compliant engines to include inline models

NEW ORLEANS - Dec. 1, 2015 – Today, GE Marine announced the next evolution of its breakthrough Tier 4 compliant marine diesel engines. GE Marine has extended its Tier 4 engine series to include 16- and 12-cylinder V-models, an 8-cylinder inline model, and a 6-cylinder inline model that is currently planned for  development.

“GE was the first in the industry to introduce a Tier 4 compliant marine engine,” said Yuvbir Singh, vice president of Global Locomotive, Marine, Stationary and Drill Operations at GE Transportation. “We believe this expansion of our revolutionary Tier 4 engine will help our marine customers improve performance while continuing to comply with stricter emission regulations.”

The engine series meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Tier 4 emission standards without the use of urea after-treatment, while maintaining fuel efficiency and service intervals. In addition, the engines have a faster response time to load steps, and a Maximum Continuous Rating (MCR) that is 12 percent higher than their Tier 3 compliant predecessors.

The 12-cylinder V-model engine (12V250MDC), along with other GE Marine power, propulsion and digital service offerings – including GE’s suite of intelligent digital marine solutions and the Lufkin Marine Propulsion Gearbox – are on display at booth #1927.

GE Marine’s customers have positively responded to the next generation offering of marine diesel engines to help them achieve optimal operation and emissions compliance, including Reinauer Transportation. The company purchased two 12V250MDC Tier 4 diesel engines for its new Articulated Tug & Barge.

“We chose the new GE Marine engines because we like their robust design and component configuration,” said Christian Reinauer. “The engine closely matches the footprint of our current vessel design. This limits the amount of re-engineering while meeting Tier 4 emissions requirements without the complications of urea after-treatment.”

In addition:

  • Harvey Gulf International Marine ordered two 12V250MDC Tier 4 diesel engines, which will power its new Robert Allen designed Multi-Purpose Field Support Vessel, currently under construction at Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, FL, and
  • Oceaneering ordered five 12V250MDC Tier 4 diesel engines for its new Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR) vessel – MSV Ocean Evolution.

 “We’re excited to see customers positively respond to the evolution of our Tier 4 engine series,” Singh said. “This momentum validates the bet we made on developing a solution without after-treatment.”
