GE and TÜLOMSAŞ Showcase First PowerHaul Locomotive Manufactured in Turkey
Berlin, Germany and Eskisehir, Turkey -- GE Transportation (NYSE: GE) introduced with its partner, TÜLOMSAŞ at Innotrans 2012 in Berlin, the first GE PowerHaul Locomotive to be manufactured in Turkey. GE’s strategic relationship with TÜLOMSAŞ, a regional leader in locomotives manufacturing and maintenance, is for producing locomotives under GE license for the European, Middle East and North African markets. GE is providing leading technology and components while TÜLOMSAŞ provides manufacturing and assembly in Turkey for PowerHaul, GE’s most technologically advanced, fuel efficient and low emissions diesel electric freight locomotive to date.

Celebrating a Milestone
In 2008, GE and TÜLOMSAŞ signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and in December 2009 signed a licensing agreement. In July 2010, GE placed the first order to build the European PowerHaul locomotive for delivery in 2012. The first GE PowerHaul locomotive assembled and tested in Turkey from components manufactured at GE’s plant in Erie, USA, premiered in 2011.. Now, premiering at InnoTrans 2012 is the first locomotive manufactured in Turkey from components supplied by both partners. This locomotive will commence a year-long testing program at GE’s facility in Erie in preparation for expanded operations and demonstrations to potential customers.

The 129-ton PowerHaul Series locomotive is designed for high pulling power to support lighter axleload applications, the PowerHaul Locomotive is engineered to generate more horsepower and tractive effort with a V-16, twin turbo 3,700-GHP or 2,750 kW engine, 6 axles and advanced AC traction system, and dynamic braking. A product of ecomagination, GE’s commitment to imagine and build innovative solutions for today’s environmental challenges, the locomotive also reduces fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 9% compared to current operating fleet averages.

TÜLOMSAŞ, the only locomotive supplier in Turkey, has a longstanding and vast experience in manufacturing and maintenance. The facility opened in 1894 as a maintenance and repair workshop for locomotives. As an affiliated company of the Turkish State Railways, TÜLOMSAŞ has been responding to all the locomotive and wagon needs of Turkey for more than a century.
