Alaska Railroad Corporation
The Alaska Railroad Corporation relies on the RailConnect Transportation Management System (TMS) to increase car hire accuracy and ensure that car hire data and reclaim codes are correct prior to processing. RailConnect TMS has helped the Alaska Railroad Corporation eliminate false car hire claims, decreased the time needed to process car hire claims, and reduced the overall amount of car hire claims by 97%.
In addition, the Alaska Railroad Corporation uses the RailConnect TMS Fleet Master as the central source for railcar inventory data and predictive and preventative railcar maintenance information. RailConnect TMS Fleet Master has helped the Alaska Railroad Corporation sustain a record of 15 consecutive years without an equipment caused derailment.
Advanced automation capabilities in the RailConnect system also help the Alaska Railroad improve equipment monitoring and accurately manage data related to AAR historical billing, equipment loadings, air brake test dates, and WILD reporting to monitor fleet health.
Central California Traction Company
Central California Traction Company uses the RailConnect Transportation Management (TMS) Toxic Inhalation module to manage over 500 carloads of hazardous material per year and satisfy chain of custody reporting as required by federal regulation 49 CFR 1580. RailConnect TMS ensures the Central California Traction Company can identify, manage, and automate reporting on railcar locations, shipment information, and emergency response instructions for all railcars containing security-sensitive, hazardous materials.
Central California Traction Company also depends on the RailConnect TMS Work List module to create over 1,400 work orders and crew instructions every year. This has enabled train crews to automatically show railcar placement information and eliminate manual yard checks. In addition, RailConnect TMS automatically generates reports, calculates car storage charges, and produces monthly car counts for customer billing.
Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad

Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad engaged the RailConnect Value Delivery Service to complete a thorough audit of railroad operations and develop a targeted plan to increase automation.
The RailConnect Value Delivery Team, staffed by software professionals with deep rail industry expertise, worked closely with Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad to implement RailConnect TMS Blocking Tables to automate interchange of all unit train traffic. In addition, RailConnect mCrew, the mobile solution for RailConnect TMS, was implemented to help train crews remotely manage, record, and process railcar movement data in the field – where and when the work occurs. The combination of RailConnect TMS Blocking Tables and RailConnect mCrew have enabled Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad to increase automation on all train movements to more than 90%, and significantly streamline workflow processing, increase staff productivity, and reduce manual data entry and processing.
In addition, the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad implemented two ShipperConnect solutions to help its customers increase automation and improve communications. ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface has eliminated the need for phone, fax, and email, and allowed customers to directly transmit work instructions and service requests directly to RailConnect TMS, which automatically updates the railroad’s crew work schedules. ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading has also helped customers utilize industry EDI standards and eliminate repetitive billing patterns.
Fairfield Southern Company
Fairfield Southern Company implemented RailConnect m-Crew, the mobile solution for RailConnect Transportation Management System (TMS), to allow train crews to remotely manage, record, and process railcar movement data as the work occurs. Reporting railcar movements in real-time helped Fairfield Southern Company increase train crew efficiency and reduce the time needed to complete switch moves by 75%. Timely data reporting also helped Fairfield Southern Company decrease nearly 100% of all manual data entry and clerical processing, and realize a 25% reduction in employee overtime costs.
Fairfield Southern Company also implemented ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface to provide accurate information on railcars in transit and improve customer service. Service requests submitted via ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface automatically update the crew work lists in RailConnect TMS and immediately generate work orders that are ready for assignment.

Lake State Railway Company uses the ExpressYard Car Repair Billing System to manage railcar maintenance and repair, reduce manual data entry, and process billing for parts and labor. Lake State Railway Company also relies on ExpressYard Mobile to enable quick and efficient data capture on parts and inventory with a simple scan of a barcode. ExpressYard Mobile has helped Lake State Railway Company prevent redundant data entry, reduce errors, and improve billing accuracy.
With the help of ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading, Lake State Railway Company has helped its customers streamline bill of lading processing and reduce manual data entry. Today, 77% of all customers use ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading and 100% of all hazmat shipments are now processed electronically.
In addition, Lake State Railway Company has recently implemented RailConnect Revenue Management Advanced Analytics to support business and accounting needs. RailConnect Revenue Management Advanced Analytics has increased billing automation to more than 70% and resulted in a corresponding improvement in billing accuracy. Manual data entry and spreadsheet processing has been eliminated and closing timeliness on month-end accounting has dramatically improved. Lange Stegmann has realized substantial savings and efficiencies with the help of ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading and ShipperConnect Demurrage Management.
ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading has helped Lange-Stegmann realize a 22% reduction in the time needed to bill and release unit train shipments, now requiring less than 19 hours to load and release an 85 car unit train. Automating the bill of lading process has saved Lange-Stegmann clerical processing time, increased operating efficiency, and enabled nightly train departures, which prevents congestion in the yard the next day.
In addition, ShipperConnect Demurrage Management has reduced demurrage charges by 86% as a result of real-time data capture on all railcar placements at the plant. Rather than waiting hours for the billing clerk to complete administrative processing and data entry, ShipperConnect Demurrage Management allows the manager in the rail tower to capture demurrage events, calculate charges, and process shipments instantly. Lange-Stegmann is able to apply complex demurrage rates and tariffs, manage exceptions, and audit railroad invoices to increase billing accuracy.
In 2012, these efficiencies helped Lange Stegmann increase railcar loadings by 726% to more than 6,300 carloads.
Lodestar Logistics utilizes ShipperConnect solutions to support customers in its Rail Logistics Management practice. As a logistics service provider, Lodestar Logistics relies on ShipperConnect Rail Track & Trace to improve rail shipment visibility, expedite railcars in transit, and quickly manage exceptions and delays. ShipperConnect Rail Track & Trace analytics and data mining capabilities have helped Lodestar Logistics increase railcar utilization for its customers and reduce fleet costs by as much as 10-20%. In addition, Lodestar Logistics has worked closely with GE Transportation Optimization Solutions to develop an integrated rail operations and technology solution for a new crude by rail and coal terminal on the Houston Ship Channel. The solution design includes the RailConnect Transportation Management System for rail operations and railcar management, EDI messaging and AEI reader integration for seamless data capture, and multiple ShipperConnect solutions for rail supply chain management including Rail Track & Trace, Electronic Bill of Lading, Bulk Inventory Management, Demurrage Management, and Railcar Inspection.
Louisville & Indiana Railroad

In the past year, Louisville & Indiana Railroad has increased the use of RailConnect Transportation Management System (TMS) and improved automation with RailConnect Blocking Tables, Work Lists, Auto-Interchange Rules, and Automatic Customer Notifications. RailConnect automation has eliminated manual processing, reduced paperwork, and increased railroad operating efficiency.
Louisville & Indiana Railroad has automated 65% of all outbound interchange movest with the help of RailConnect Blocking Tables and Auto-Interchange Rules, dramatically reducing the time required to manage and administer a process that was previously 100% manual. Louisville & Indiana Railroad has also increased the automation of arrival and constructive placement notifications from less than 10% to 35% and certain traffic moves have been 100% automated. Similarly, RailConnect TMS allows Louisville & Indiana Railroad to automatically notify customers of bad order moves and automatically refresh and create crew work lists.

OmniTrax has also implemented RailConnect Train Reporting on each of its railroads. The combination of RailConnect mCrew and RailConnect Train Reporting enables close collaboration between Omnitrax train crews and the Customer Support Center to execute train departures. Real-time railcar movement activity captured by RailConnect mCrew and active internal communication enables the Customer Support Center to review the railcars on each train, accurately apply fees and charges, and capture all revenue opportunities on each train prior to departure.
In addition, RailConnect Business Intelligence provides detailed management information and key performance metrics to help Omnitrax increase automation, decrease manual processing, and eliminate daily repetitive work tasks. As a result, Omnitrax has been able to allocate staff time to higher value initiatives and internalize train dispatching without increasing headcount at the Customer Support Center or on any of its operating railroads.
To further extend the value of RailConnect TMS, approximately 90% of all Omnitrax customers use ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface to communicate service requests directly in RailConnect TMS, which automatically updates and generates crew work lists.
Ontario Northland has implemented ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface to allow its rail shippers to communicate service instructions, order railcars to the plant, and release loaded railcars directly in the RailConnect Transportation Management System (TMS), which automatically updates and generates the railroad’s crew work lists.
In addition, Ontario Northland further extended shipper automation with ShipperConnect Electronic Bill of Lading to help customers send industry standard EDI messages, authorize shipment instructions, and reduce manual data entry and clerical processing. Ontario Northland also relies on RailConnect TMS for daily management of railroad operations. With RailConnect TMS, Ontario Northland has automated railcar processing at interchange gateways and reduced manual data entry and processing. Accurate and timely railcar interchange data has helped Ontario Northland decrease car hire expense and increase staff productivity.

Seamless data integration has helped Pacific Harbor Line increase TRAIN II reporting and effectiveness, reduce clerical processing, and save time for managers to focus on higher priority initiatives, such as employee safety.
RailConnect Advanced Blocking Tables automatically process EDI messages for release of loaded railcars and RailConnect Repetitive Waybill Codes apply the appropriate charges - all without any manual processing or staff intervention. In addition, RailConnect TMS pushes automated email notifications to customers, which reduces railcar dwell time and improves the customer’s ability to plan and schedule rail operations.
In addition, Pacific Harbor Line has deployed ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface to allow customers to order railcars to the plant and release loaded railcars. Prior to the implementation of ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface, Pacific Harbor Line customers called and faxed work orders and requests throughout the day. Today, ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface loads all service requests directly in RailConnect TMS, which automatically updates and generates crew work lists.
Port Terminal Railroad Association
The Port Terminal Railroad Association relies on multiple solutions in the RailConnect, ShipperConnect, RailDOCS and ExpressYard product lines to manage railroads operations, maintain wayside and railcar assets, and provide excellent customer service to their rail shippers.
In 2012, the Port Terminal Railroad Association began using RailConnect Business Intelligence to improve management information and performance metrics to further streamline operations, drive automation, and increase efficiency across the railroad. The purpose of deployment was to increase visibility on key performance metrics related to train scheduling such as on-time performance, service delays and exceptions, interchange railcar counts and charges, outbound reporting, bad orders, and other detailed operating measures.
RailConnect Business Intelligence delivers interactive executive dashboards, Key Performance Indicators, Operating and Exception Metrics, and Ad-hoc Reporting Capabilities that enable customized reporting. RailConnect Business Intelligence replaced an internal reporting system that required numerous data feeds, and it has reduced the time needed to generate management reports from more than two weeks to “on-demand.”
As a result, RailConnect Business Intelligence has helped the Port Terminal Railroad Association save time, eliminate manual processing, increase visibility on critical operating data, and improve management of railroad operations. In addition, the success of RailConnect Business Intelligence has reduced the need for internal IT support and eliminated a back-end data repository and related hardware costs.
Stockton Terminal & Eastern

The Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad depends on RailConnect Transportation Management System (TMS) to operate the railroad. RailConnect TMS Auto-Interchange Rules automate the interchange of railcars and reject incorrect interchange moves from connecting Class I carriers. An interface between RailConnect TMS and AEI data feeds ensures that railcars are only brought online after reporting by the AEI reader, saving the railroad countless dollars in car hire expense.
RailConnect TMS Online Inventory Snapshot quickly and easily counts railcars in the yard and eliminates the need to physically walk the yard and manually count railcars. Accurate counts of railcars online have ensured timely enforcement of track lease agreements, reduced idle equipment on storage tracks by 50%, and generated additional revenue from capacity now available to serve new storage customers.
RailConnect mCrew, the mobile solution for RailConnect TMS, increased the timeliness and accuracy of data reporting by train crews on all railcar movements, reduced manual data entry by over 95%, and increased Train II reporting from 34% to 99%. As a result, Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad earned a Union Pacific revenue incentive for timely and accurate Train II reporting.
In addition, all rail shippers on the Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad now use ShipperConnect Rail Carrier Interface to order and release railcars. This has eliminated all hand-written work lists and improved customer service as a result of better communication with its rail shippers.

RailConnect TMS has helped Union Railroad automate the application of constructive placements and inbound waybills, which has reduced manual data entry and processing by 35%. In addition, RailConnect TMS has helped Union Railroad reduce clerical errors by 60% and capture 20% more revenue by automating the billing process and increasing billing accuracy.
