AC Drill Rig Motors

  • Now for more than 25 years, GE has supplied thousands of AC traction motors for land and offshore drilling rigs world-wide. Offered in both horizontal and vertical configurations, the 1150HP and 1500HP AC motors will meet the most stringent requirements of your drilling equipment. Design features include heavy-duty frames, form-wound stator windings, high-strength rotor assemblies and GE’s low-inertia rotor.

    Greater torque and speed

    GE’s AC drilling motors produce more torque at both low and high speeds than a DC counterpart. Maximum speed for a GE horizontal AC motor is 3,000 rpm.

    Low inertia rotor

    A low inertia rotor enhances the drawworks performance by providing highly responsive acceleration, reduced braking time and less wasted energy. The lower weight and inertia of the rotor is achieved through a design that optimizes current and flux densities.

    Fantastic design

    Rugged, heavy-duty frame absorbs the high torque and pounding conditions present in drilling applications.

    Form-wound windings, GE’s superior Class H insulation and VPI application process provides superior protection from winding failures because of voltage spikes.

    The copper chromium alloy rotor bars
and brazed end turns increase the reliability and life of the rotor assembly and is standard on
all horizontal AC motors. Optional oversized shaft extension and hub are available for belt-driven applications.

    This provides IP56 protection certified to ATEX standards by Sira. Closed cooling system provides maximum protection to motor windings from airborne contaminants and moisture. TEWAC configurations are available with both 1150 HP and 1500 HP motors.

    This centralized 
approach with tape heaters being wound into the endturns of the motor (most susceptible place for moisture) provides 200 watts on each end totaling 400 watts. Provisions have been provided on both sides of the motor for connection box mounting. The new optional heater upgrade eliminates the need for a separate auxiliary box.
