GE’s digital and locally developed locomotives take route in Brazil

Brazil has nearly 30,000 kilometers of railways, which are used to carry tons of food and raw materials to every corner of the country.

GE Transportation moved into the future as the digital industrial leader delivered in March its 1,500th locomotive in the country with full digital integration – ready to receive data and analytical insights through software and digital solutions.

The Evolution ES43BBi, the next-generation GE Transportation locomotive, was the first to be entirely developed in Brazil by GE. The locomotive was specially designed to have eight axels, an efficient model for meter gauge tracks, which is compatible with 80% of the Brazilian rail network.


GE Transportation is delivering more than a big machine – it’s a complete operational solution for customers.The new locomotives leave the factory ready to receive software and digital solutions, such as autopilot and a remote monitoring system that gives real-time alerts. For example, if there is increased water temperature in the motor’s cooling system, GE central remote command receives a signal and the customer is notified immediately. There is the opportunity to take action before the issue creates any impacts on the tracks.

Other innovations of the locomotive include a load capacity that is 100% greater than that found in prior technologies and its diesel engine, the 4,400-horsepower GE EVO12, can reduce emission of pollutants by 80% and ensure energy efficiency and high performance.

To achieve these highlights, the Evolution ES43BBi was developed by GE Transportation employees based in Brazil, the United States, India, Russia, Mexico and China. The Rumo ALL team, responsible for 12,900 kilometers of railways in Brazil and the GE Transportation customer receiving the locomotives, also supported the efforts.

For Rumo ALL, the locomotive means productivity gains and reduced operating costs. Evolution ES4BBi is bringing more efficiency to Brazil’s national rail network and digital intelligence.
